For decades we have studied the environmental impacts of our resource extraction economies. The time is now to better understand how our new amenity-based economy is affecting this same environment and how we can avoid or mitigate these impacts. The day will include an overview of regional growth trends – including population and land use trends, as well as growth of the outdoor recreation industry and the expansion of regional transportation systems. We will then address the specific impacts of these trends on natural values and communities and reflect on their combined or cumulative impacts – especially when coupled with climate change. The second half of the day will highlight case studies of promising efforts to overcome these conservation challenges.
