As a community arts hub, the Emerson relies on the time, energy and enthusiasm donated by community volunteers and interns. You can get involved by becoming a docent at one of our galleries, helping set up for events, assisting kids building gingerbread houses, editing articles for our newsletter or doing a tour of duty in our office. Simply fill out a volunteer application and send it to the Emerson. A volunteer coordinator will contact you.

Montana State University partners with the Emerson to offer an internship program. Juniors and seniors in the School of Art learn about The Emerson's education and exhibits programs and arts administration. Students earn school credit as they work along side Emerson's teachers, arts preparators, and administrators to learn the tools of the trade in working in a community art center. Other community volunteer possibilities include helping with exhibit installation, events programming, graphic design, and classes for children and adults. Click here for more information.

Frances Senska Pottery - Resident Artist & Studio Technician

The Emerson is pleased to announce a twelve-month artist residency program for artists with solid training in ceramics and a developing body of work. The Frances Senska Pottery Resident Artist & Studio Technician is a highly community-minded individual with a strong commitment to their studio work, wild imagination, full-on communication and proactive organizing skills, strong interest in teaching youth, and a burning desire to play a pivotal role helping the Emerson build the best community ceramics program in the Northern Rockies.

The Senska Residency runs August 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009

The Emerson provides residents with 24/7 use of the Frances Senska Pottery Studio and kiln. Note that this is a shared space with no existing private studio for residents, although we are willing to work with the resident to rearrange the studio so that it works for you, students and teachers. The Emerson pays residents for 10 hours of labor, per week, to maintain the facilities. The resident works as a studio technician in charge of kilns, clay and glaze mixing and maintenance. Resident artists also are expected to teach weekly classes for youth, which will be paid in addition to the 10 hours.

How to Apply:

Click here for a full residency description, including application instructions. Applications due June 1, 2008. We will conduct interviews the end of June, and send notifications by July 1.
